If you remember last issue, I made the statement that I was going to start a gratitude journal on my birthday. Well, the week before my birthday, I bought a new journal. It sat on my desk awaiting my writings. However, a day or two before my birthday, I looked at my new journal and then I looked at all the other journals I’ve started. I said to myself: Who am I kidding? I’m not going to write in this journal every day. This realization made me angry; I really, really wanted to start being more conscious of all the good in my life. So I took a bold step. I started a blog.

It’s hard to believe that Spring is here and 2010 is already a fourth of the way over. In my immediate family, this season is what we affectionately call the birthday sweep. From March-June we have 9 birthdays, ranging from celebrating those turning two to those in their fifties. I myself have a birthday in March, and while I love to celebrate with cake, this year I have decided to make a resolution (I find resolutions are better made on birthdays, not the 1st of the year) and call this year “My Year of Thanks,” in which I will attempt to be fully thankful and appreciative for all I have now and to all those who have helped me get here.

Welcome to 2010 and a brand new Women’s Press. Well, really it’s not that new–the content is still the same, but the layout has changed. This new design, as you can see, makes our paper larger, in all color, and easier to notice. I’m excited to see Women’s Press around town, in the hands of women (and men!), reading about Breast Thermography (by Gaea Powell, pg. 7), dealing with loss and grief (by Kathy Bond, pg. 3 & Ruth Maples, pg. 8), learning about the limitations of birthing women (by Jennifer Stover, pg. 11), and gaining another perspective on our local Sunny Acre’s debate (by Matt Lombardini, pg. 16). All of these article and more have helped me gain a new appreciation for what our community has–wisdom!

This is my favorite time of the year. I love how the days get cooler, the hills turn green, and holiday decorations begin to adorn homes across the country. I adore how people seem cheerier and neighbors come over bearing homemade breads and cookies. And while it’s easy to get caught up in the bustle of buying gifts, preparing lavish meals, and feeling anxiety over our quickly diminishing bank accounts, I would encourage you to take a moment to slow down, look out the window, and appreciate the holiday season. Life seems good during these last few months of the year.
